Tensions in West Asia show no signs of easing. A Houthi attack on a vessel in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a critical corridor for oil transport, has caused alarm. Notably, the Yemeni coast guard revealed that three sailors lost their lives in the attack. The deceased are suspected to be nationals of Pakistan and Indonesia. Several others are reported missing, with their details yet to be established.
Officials said the attack took place while a Tanzanian-flagged cargo vessel was travelling from Oman to Djibouti. The Houthis, however, have not issued any statement on the attack so far.
The Bab al-Mandeb Strait holds immense importance for oil transport. Located between Yemen and Djibouti, it connects the Red Sea with the Arabian Sea and serves as a key route for ships and oil tankers heading toward the Suez Canal en route to Asia, Europe, North America, and West Asia. Between 10 and 12 percent of oil traded internationally passes through this strait, along with LNG, manufactured goods, and food items moving between major markets. Officials revealed that goods worth ₹93.95 lakh crore are transported through this strait every year.
