The investigation into the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital continues to unfold. The CBI is actively probing the case, and recently, it filed a charge sheet in the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Sealdah. According to the charge sheet, Sanjay Roy is the sole perpetrator of the rape, ruling out any evidence of a gang rape. The CBI completed its investigation within two months, citing Sanjay Roy as the prime accused and registering statements from around 200 witnesses. The charge sheet also revealed that Sanjay Roy had been working as a volunteer with the police on a contractual basis. However, the role of RG Kar’s former principal, Sandeep Ghosh, remains unclear.
On August 9, the trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital, sparking nationwide protests. Junior doctors and medical students staged massive demonstrations. There were allegations that hospital principal Sandeep Ghosh and Kolkata police attempted to tamper with evidence. However, Sanjay Roy was arrested by the police the very next day. Public outrage over the police’s handling of the case led the Supreme Court to intervene, transferring the case to the CBI for investigation.
The CBI, after two months of investigation, also filed charges against the former principal of RG Kar Hospital. The new charge sheet claims that Sanjay Roy acted alone in committing the rape. The court’s judgment is now awaited. Meanwhile, junior doctors in Kolkata continue their protests, accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of failing to fulfill the promises made to them. They are also demanding justice for the victim’s family.
