Why BJP Won Big in Bengal: Factors Behind the Political Shift

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has delivered a sweeping electoral performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections, marking one of the most significant political shifts in recent years. Early trends indicate that the party has crossed the majority mark and is leading in 199 constituencies, while the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) is ahead in only 88 seats. The development signals a major setback for the TMC, which has governed the state for the past 15 years.

West Bengal has long witnessed a fierce political contest between the TMC and BJP. In 2011, the TMC ended the Left Front’s decades-long rule and secured 177 seats, while the BJP emerged as the principal opposition with 77 seats. Since then, the BJP has steadily expanded its footprint in the state, improving its vote share in both the 2016 and 2021 elections. However, the current trends suggest a dramatic reversal, with the BJP translating its growing support into a decisive mandate.

Analysts attribute the BJP’s surge to strong anti-incumbency sentiments against the TMC government, which has been in power for over a decade and a half. Public concerns over unemployment, governance issues, and allegations of corruption have played a key role in shaping voter sentiment. High-profile controversies, including the school recruitment scam and ration distribution irregularities, along with the arrest of senior leaders such as former minister Partha Chatterjee, have further dented the ruling party’s image.

Several social issues have also influenced the electoral outcome. Incidents related to women’s safety, including the RG Kar Medical College case and the Sandeshkhali episode, triggered widespread public outrage and protests across the state. At the same time, the BJP’s campaign focused heavily on alleged illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, voter list revisions under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, and consolidation of Hindu votes, all of which strengthened its support base.

The BJP’s campaign was further bolstered by high-decibel campaigning from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior party leaders in the state. Promises of welfare measures, particularly financial assistance of ₹3,000 per month for women under a proposed “double-engine government,” also resonated with voters. Combined with Modi’s national appeal and aggressive campaign strategy, these factors are being viewed as decisive in the party’s projected victory in West Bengal.
