A significant development has emerged in efforts to end the war between the two countries. US President Donald Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are preparing to travel to Russia and Ukraine to facilitate continued talks between the two sides. Against this backdrop, the announcement of a ceasefire has taken on particular significance. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Friday, proposed a temporary ceasefire aimed at easing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky stated that Ukraine would refrain from carrying out air strikes on Russia while American representatives conduct talks with both Russia and Ukraine. At the same time, he called on Russia to halt its attacks on Kyiv. Zelensky expressed the view that if both countries were to suspend attacks at least until talks take place, it would create conditions favorable to peace negotiations.
Following Zelensky’s announcement, Russian President Putin also took a significant decision. The Kremlin announced that Putin had ordered a three-day halt to attacks on Kyiv. Russia stated that this temporary pause would begin from midnight on Saturday. Meanwhile, the United States is once again working to advance negotiations aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for several years. As part of this effort, Trump’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are visiting Moscow. Following discussions with Russian officials there, they are scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Zelensky in Kyiv.
Trump had earlier announced that the United States has a new peace proposal aimed at ending the war between the two countries. Putin, too, recently indicated that there is a possibility of a peace agreement to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to a close. He stated that the United States, China, and several other countries are prepared to support a peaceful resolution.
