The U.S.–China Economic and Security Review Commission has released its annual report alleging that China attempted to undermine India–China relations by spreading disinformation linked to India’s Operation Sindhura. The report states that AI-generated fake images were circulated through bogus social media accounts, including fabricated visuals claiming debris of Rafale fighter jets downed by Chinese missiles. According to the commission, the objective was to erode global confidence in Rafale aircraft and promote demand for China’s J-35 fighters.
The commission noted that these actions form part of China’s broader “grey zone strategy,” aimed at influencing geopolitics without direct military confrontation. It highlighted that China tried to exploit the India–Pakistan conflict to showcase its military strength at a time when India’s success in Operation Sindhura had demonstrated its superior combat capability.
The report also addressed ongoing border tensions, stating that China seeks only partial resolutions through diplomatic talks while avoiding the core territorial dispute. It added that Beijing is willing to advance trade and investment but remains firm on its geopolitical claims, criticising recent border agreements as temporary and lacking clear implementation plans.
The panel further warned that the Dalai Lama succession issue may fuel future tensions between India and China. It also viewed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping as part of India’s strategic response amid shifting global tariff policies and geopolitical realignments.
