US Lawmakers Push to Revoke Trump’s India Tariffs

Washington D.C.: Three U.S. House of Representatives members have introduced a resolution urging the rollback of the 50 percent tariffs imposed on Indian imports by President Donald Trump. Lawmakers Deborah Ross, Mark Veasey, and Raja Krishnamoorthi highlighted that the tariffs are unlawful and harmful to American workers, consumers, and Indo-U.S. relations.

The resolution specifically calls for the removal of the additional 25 percent “secondary” tariffs that came into effect on August 27, 2025, which, combined with existing duties, raised tariffs on several Indian products to 50 percent. Earlier, similar emergency tariffs on Brazil had prompted bipartisan efforts in the Senate to revoke them.

Congresswoman Ross emphasized the strong trade and investment ties between North Carolina and India, noting that Indian companies have invested billions of dollars in her state, creating thousands of jobs. Representative Veasey added that the tariffs impose additional costs on North Texans already grappling with rising prices, while Krishnamoorthi warned that the measures disrupt supply chains and negatively affect U.S. workers.

The tariffs were initially imposed due to India’s continued oil imports from Russia, which Trump argued indirectly supported Moscow’s war in Ukraine. Experts say the resolution reflects Democrats’ broader effort to question unilateral trade policies, restore Congress’s authority over trade decisions, and ensure that economic measures do not hinder strategic cooperation between the U.S. and India.
