New Delhi/Kyiv: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone on Monday, providing an update on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Zelensky expressed serious concerns about India’s substantial oil imports from Russia, urging that restricting Russia’s financial resources is essential to ending the war.
Zelensky detailed the extensive damage inflicted by Russian forces across multiple cities and villages. While acknowledging the possibility of peace talks, he highlighted Russia’s continued commitment to military aggression. The Ukrainian leader appealed to Modi to impose stricter sanctions, particularly on Russian oil exports, to weaken Moscow’s war funding capabilities.

Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s consistent stance in favor of a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine-Russia conflict and assured readiness to offer all necessary support for peace efforts. The two leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation.
Both agreed to meet in person at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session in September. The call comes amid recent U.S. sanctions against India over its ongoing Russian oil purchases. Despite mounting international pressure, India maintains that its energy imports are aligned with national interests.
