U.S. Reschedules Appointments for H-1B Visa Holders

The renewal of American work permits for H-1B visa holders returning to India has been delayed, with U.S. consular offices reportedly rescheduling appointments between December 15 and 26, according to a Washington Post report. The postponement is partly attributed to the holiday season in the United States. Additionally, the U.S. State Department has cited delays due to social media vetting policies introduced during the Trump administration.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson confirmed that the department has been reviewing social media accounts for F, M, and J category visa applicants and has now extended the process to H-1B and H-4 applicants. Unlike earlier faster processing methods designed to minimize wait times, each case is now being individually examined at all U.S. diplomatic missions, including in India, before approval is granted.

In the United States, the Employment Authorization Document (EAD) issued to foreign workers serves as a work permit, allowing them to legally undertake employment. The delays in H-1B and H-4 renewals have created uncertainty for Indian professionals planning to resume work in the U.S., as their ability to legally work depends on timely issuance of the EAD.
