Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern over India’s growing proximity to China and Russia, calling it “unfortunate” for America. His remarks followed the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In a post on his social media platform *Truth Social*, Trump wrote, “India and Russia have moved closer to cunning China. The friendship among these three nations may last a long time.” He added sarcastically, “I wish them all a long and prosperous future,” while sharing a photograph of the three leaders together.

Analysts believe Trump’s policies, including steep tariffs on Indian exports and criticism of India’s oil imports from Russia, contributed to this alignment. During his presidency, Trump accused New Delhi of indirectly financing the Ukraine conflict through Russian oil purchases.
India, however, has rejected the claims. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar clarified that New Delhi makes decisions based solely on national interests and noted that Washington has not leveled similar accusations against China or the European Union. Trump’s comments are expected to intensify existing trade and strategic tensions between India and the U.S., even as India continues to assert its independent foreign policy.
