Trump Defends Tariff Policy, Warns India of Higher Duties Over Russian Oil Imports

U.S. President Donald Trump has defended his administration’s aggressive tariff policy, calling it a major economic success for the United States while issuing a fresh warning to India over its continued purchase of Russian crude oil. Trump said the tariffs imposed on several countries, including duties ranging from 100% to 200% in some cases, have generated nearly $600 million in revenue so far and continue to strengthen the U.S. economy and national security. He accused sections of the media of downplaying these gains and alleged attempts to influence an upcoming Supreme Court ruling, asserting that tariffs have made America stronger and more respected globally.

India has been among the countries affected by the tariff measures, with Washington citing New Delhi’s oil trade with Russia as indirect support for Moscow’s war in Ukraine. The additional duties have strained bilateral trade ties, and despite nearly six months of negotiations, the issue remains unresolved. Trump reiterated that the current 50% tariffs on Indian goods could be increased further if India does not align with the U.S. position on Russian oil imports.

Trump said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is aware of the situation, describing him as a good person while emphasizing that it is important for India to keep the United States satisfied. He warned that continued trade with Russia would lead to a rapid escalation in tariffs. The White House shared an audio clip of Trump’s remarks on X, while Reuters also reported his comments threatening higher duties if India does not cooperate on the Russian oil issue.
