Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced that India will no longer purchase oil from Russia, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him of this decision. Speaking at a White House press briefing, Trump described the move as a significant step in isolating Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He emphasized that India’s previous purchases of Russian oil were providing funds that helped Russia sustain its war efforts.
Trump stated that he had repeatedly expressed his displeasure over India and China trading oil with Russia, highlighting that earlier warnings had gone unheeded, leading the US to impose additional tariffs of up to 50 percent on India. He said his discussions with Modi were positive, and the Indian Prime Minister had assured him that oil imports from Russia would cease.
The US President also indicated that similar diplomatic efforts would be made with China to curb Russian oil purchases. While acknowledging the long-standing trade friction over Russian oil, Trump stressed that India remains a close partner and ally of the United States. He described his relationship with Modi as one of strong friendship and mutual respect.
Despite Trump’s statements, India has not issued any official response regarding the alleged assurance. The issue underscores the ongoing tension between India and the US over energy trade with Russia, even as both countries continue to engage in broader bilateral discussions.
