Sarvapindi and Sakinalu are widely known household snacks in Telangana, cherished across the state for generations. These traditional food items are especially popular, and now the Rural Development Department is working to bring them global recognition. To achieve this, officials are focusing on branding the Sarvapindi and Sakinalu products prepared by women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Medchal district, aiming to elevate them to international standards.
Medchal district currently has 3,585 SHGs with 38,526 members, and nearly 60 percent of these groups prepare and sell traditional snacks independently. These include laddus, boondi, sarvapindi, sakinalu, kajjikayalu, and gavvalu—almost all made using jaggery. Additionally, many groups produce sweets from millets such as ragi, jowar, and foxtail millet, and even offer boondi, kara poosa, and mixtures using millets. To support branding, the Rural Development Department has begun structured efforts aimed at scaling these products.
To qualify for branding, SHG members received training on hygienic production, attractive packaging, and obtaining quality certifications. They were taken to Kudumbashree in Kerala and Nitham in Hyderabad, where they learned to produce snacks, pickles, and powders quickly using modern equipment. As a result, products now carry certified food safety labels. Alongside this, BITS Hyderabad professors conducted sessions on marketing, agreements with multinational companies, loan opportunities, and business management. Officials are now planning tie-ups with e-commerce platforms like Amazon and Flipkart to boost sales. If these efforts succeed, Telangana’s Sarvapindi and Sakinalu may soon earn international recognition.
