Hyderabad: The Telangana government is set to resume the distribution of fine rice to ration card beneficiaries from September. Earlier in June, the Revanth Reddy-led administration had provided three months’ supply at once, covering June, July, and August. To meet the upcoming demand, the Civil Supplies Department has dispatched 1,97,621.368 tonnes of rice to mandal stock points across the state.
Officials said the number of beneficiaries has risen sharply after the issuance of 4,92,395 new ration cards since January 26, adding nearly 15 lakh people to the list. With the government now supplying fine rice instead of regular rice, the financial burden has increased considerably. To curb irregularities, a dynamic key register has been introduced. Several new cardholders who have not yet received their quota will be able to collect fine rice from ration shops starting September 1.
At the same time, political activity is gaining momentum with reports that sarpanch elections are likely to be held in September. The state cabinet, which will meet on August 29, is expected to take a final decision. The Congress government is also considering 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in the upcoming local body polls.
