Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has reported significant financial gains following the implementation of the Mahalakshmi scheme, officials confirmed. The initiative, introduced by the Congress-led government, has led to a substantial increase in revenue for the debt-ridden corporation.
Since December 9, 2023, the scheme has enabled free travel for women in ordinary and express buses, with the state government reimbursing TSRTC for the ticket costs. As a result, daily passenger numbers have surged from an average of 45.49 lakh to 59.10 lakh.
Revenue and Profit Growth
TSRTC registered a revenue of Rs 104.11 crore in the 2023–24 fiscal year. By January 2025, the corporation had recorded profits of Rs 529.20 crore, with projections estimating a total of Rs 709.29 crore by the end of the financial year. Government forecasts indicate that profits could reach Rs 1,008.79 crore in 2025–26.
Outstanding Liabilities and Debt
Despite the financial recovery, TSRTC continues to carry outstanding liabilities amounting to Rs 9,897.55 crore as of February 28, 2025. This includes Rs 2,719.71 crore in bank loans and Rs 7,177.84 crore in pending employee payments.
Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, addressing budget allocations for the transport sector, highlighted TSRTC’s financial progress and outlined key objectives for the upcoming fiscal year.
