The swearing-in ceremony for elected corporators and councillors across Telangana is scheduled for 11:30 AM, with mayoral and chairman elections set to follow at 12:30 PM. The recent municipal elections, held for 116 municipalities and 7 municipal corporations, have shown the Congress party securing a clear majority in most seats, though key corporations have resulted in a hung verdict, creating high political tension across the state. Parties are actively strategizing to secure mayoral and chairman positions, making the process closely watched.
In Karimnagar and Nizamabad corporations, Congress treated the mayoral posts as highly prestigious. However, in Karimnagar, it won only 14 out of 60 seats, and in Nizamabad, 17 out of 60, while the BJP emerged as the largest party with 30 and 28 seats respectively. Congress managed to consolidate support from independents, strengthening its chances of securing the mayoral posts in both corporations, despite the BJP’s numerical advantage.
Kothagudem witnessed a surprise outcome as the CPI secured the highest number of seats, winning 22, while Congress won 22, BRS 8, and independents 8. Following post-election discussions, CPI and Congress agreed on a power-sharing arrangement, under which the mayoral position will rotate over the next five years, with CPI holding it initially and Congress taking it later. This agreement has resolved some of the uncertainty while keeping political dynamics in the region interesting.
The overall results highlight a mix of decisive victories and hung verdicts across the state, demonstrating that political negotiations and alliances will play a crucial role in determining the leadership in key municipal corporations. The final outcome of the mayoral and chairman elections will be closely watched, as it will shape the governance and political balance in Telangana’s urban local bodies for the coming term.
