The Telangana government has taken a controversial step by filing cases against individuals who participated in protests following the deadly bus accident in Chevella. A total of 25 people have been charged after they staged a demonstration demanding better road conditions, which they blame for the tragic accident. The accident, which occurred near Chevella Mirzaguda, claimed the lives of more than 19 people.
Local residents, led by the Tandur Development Forum, have pointed out that the lack of road expansion contributed to the severity of the crash. The protesters argue that the road, which has been the site of frequent accidents, needs urgent attention. A constable’s complaint has led to the police registering cases against the demonstrators for causing public disruption and holding an unauthorized protest.
In response to the incident, the government has ordered an investigation, while also announcing compensation of ₹7 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹2 lakh for those injured. The Telangana Human Rights Commission has taken suo-motu cognizance of the issue and instructed authorities to submit a detailed report by December 15.
The accident occurred when a tipper lorry, loaded with gravel, collided with an RTC bus from the Tandur depot. Preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts suggest that the lorry driver’s speeding and loss of control at a sharp turn were the primary causes of the crash. RTC officials have clarified that neither the bus nor its driver were responsible for the accident, confirming that the bus was in good condition and the driver had no prior accident record.
However, the owner of the tipper has accused the bus driver of reckless driving, alleging that he attempted to avoid potholes, causing the collision. The dispute over the cause of the accident continues to fuel tension between local authorities and the residents.
