The Telangana government has announced plans to reorganize Hyderabad by dividing the city into three municipal corporations. The move involves merging surrounding village panchayats and municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). The Musi River will serve as a central reference point in the division, with the new corporations named Greater Hyderabad, Greater Secunderabad, and Greater Cyberabad. The river, which is central to the city’s drainage system, will span across the jurisdictions of the three corporations.
Each corporation is proposed to have 100 wards, organized into 20 circles and 5 zones, with each zone containing four circles. Administrative leadership will include three mayors, one for each corporation, and a commissioner-level officer for each corporation. The final notification regarding the restructuring is expected in January, with elections anticipated to be held in April or May.
Under the new arrangement, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will cover the old city and central Hyderabad, the Greater Secunderabad Municipal Corporation (GSMC) will encompass the northern and northeastern areas, and the Greater Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (GCMC) will include the western and northwestern regions. This reorganization is aimed at improving governance, administrative efficiency, and urban planning across the rapidly expanding metropolitan area.
