Hyderabad: Telangana government has extended alcohol sales until midnight on December 31 to facilitate New Year celebrations. However, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Sajjanar has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone driving under the influence.
Special traffic checks targeting drunk driving have already commenced across Hyderabad, with intensified inspections in 120 city locations, the Commissioner stated. Violators will face vehicle seizure, a fine of ₹10,000, and imprisonment of up to six months.
On the first day of the campaign alone, 304 individuals were apprehended for consuming alcohol while driving. Police seized their vehicles and took the offenders into custody. Commissioner Sajjanar reiterated that drunk driving will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Commissioner advised partygoers to arrange for designated drivers or book cabs to ensure a safe commute. Special attention will be given to pubs, three-star, and five-star hotels hosting New Year events, with celebrations permitted only until 1 a.m. Noise regulations will be strictly enforced, and sound systems exceeding decibel limits will be seized.
Authorities have also emphasized zero tolerance for drug use, obscene dancing, or misconduct during celebrations. Licenses will be revoked and criminal cases filed against violators. For women’s safety, police will deploy 15 special teams across crowded venues, junctions, and party locations. Any inappropriate behavior towards women will result in immediate arrest.
