Hyderabad: The Telangana government has completed its caste census, and the report was officially tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday. Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha on Monday, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi made key remarks on the findings, calling for a nationwide caste census.
“We conducted a caste census in Telangana, and the results were shocking. Nearly 90% of the state’s population comprises Dalits, Adivasis, Backward Classes (BCs), and minorities. This indicates a similar demographic trend across the country. The OBC population alone exceeds 50% nationwide. Despite generating a significant share of the country’s wealth, these communities own few industries. Even major media organizations supporting Prime Minister Modi are not owned by Dalits, Adivasis, or OBCs. A nationwide caste census would expose the actual distribution of wealth, power, and institutional control. While the BJP has Dalit, Adivasi, and OBC MPs, OBC representatives, despite forming 50% of the population, rarely speak in Parliament,” he stated.
