Telangana Bandh Over Alleged Harassment by Marwari Traders

Hyderabad: Osmania University’s Joint Action Committee (JAC) has called for a Telangana bandh, alleging that Marwaris from Gujarat and Rajasthan have been harassing local traders. The bandh has received backing from trade associations and community organizations. Goldsmiths in Janagam and traders in Kondamallepalli have expressed support, while mobile shops in Nalgonda and various businesses in Yadadri district have announced they will remain closed. Traders in Narayanapet district, including Maktal, Haliya, and Devarakonda, are also participating.

The bandh was prompted by allegations of an attack on a Dalit individual at Monda Market by Marwari traders. Organizers claim that Marwaris are selling products at low prices, causing losses to local businesses, and pose a threat to local employment. In response, Marwari traders have filed complaints with the DGP, seeking action against defamatory statements.

Authorities have warned that the bandh could severely disrupt public transport, with RTC buses likely restricted to depots and private buses and auto services potentially suspending operations. Police are taking preventive measures to avoid untoward incidents.

Politically, the “Marwari Go Back” campaign has intensified tensions. BJP leaders and Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, along with Raja Singh, have expressed support for the Marwaris, calling the campaign a conspiracy aimed at dividing the Hindu community. Sanjay stressed that Marwaris conduct their businesses legally, contribute to protecting Hindu Sanatan Dharma, and are being unfairly targeted. He also warned that any movement against Marwaris could trigger protests to protect local Hindu communities.
