New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday delivered a key verdict in the Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar case, ruling that the petition filed by the Telangana government was not maintainable. However, the apex court granted liberty to Telangana to seek resolution through alternative legal remedies. The court observed that issues relating to the sharing of Godavari river waters require hearing the views of other riparian states, including Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The court advised that disputes over alleged violations of water allocations should be addressed by filing a civil suit, enabling all concerned states to present their arguments. Following this observation, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the Telangana government, informed the bench that the state was withdrawing its petition and would file a civil suit to pursue the matter further.

Reacting to the verdict, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said Telangana had filed the writ petition opposing the Polavaram–Nallamala Sagar project proposed by the Andhra Pradesh government. He stated that the main issue was ensuring that water usage does not exceed allocated limits and alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government had committed multiple violations, including non-implementation of stop-work orders, which were brought to the notice of the Supreme Court.
