Moscow/Ahmedabad: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck Russia’s Kuril Islands, according to the Center for Seismology. The quake’s epicenter was located 10 kilometers underground. This follows Wednesday’s massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake in the Kamchatka Peninsula, which prompted tsunami warnings in Russia, Japan, and Hawaii. Coastal areas in Japan witnessed tsunami waves following the earlier quake.

The latest tremor occurred approximately 200 miles from Kamchatka, causing renewed concerns among residents already shaken by continuous seismic activity. Although no tsunami alert was issued for the Kuril quake, authorities moved locals to safer areas. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that after the 8.8 quake, the region experienced 125 aftershocks of magnitude 4.4 or higher within hours, including three measuring above 6.0. Tsunami waves hit Kamchatka’s ports and the coasts of Japan and Hawaii, with waves reaching up to three meters. No casualties or significant property damage have been reported.

In India, a mild earthquake measuring 3.3 struck Gujarat’s Kutch district on Thursday at 9:52 AM. The Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) stated the epicenter was 16 kilometers southwest of Bela. Disaster management officials confirmed that no loss of life or property occurred. Kutch is a seismically active region, with the 2001 earthquake in the area having claimed over 13,800 lives and injured more than 167,000 people.
