Hyderabad: With the announcement of Sankranti holidays for schools from today, residents of Hyderabad have begun heading to their native villages, resulting in massive congestion across bus stations, railway stations, and major roads. Early festive celebrations were held in schools across the city today, and the overlap of weekend holidays has prompted many families to travel in advance, creating unprecedented crowds at APSRTC bus stations and Secunderabad Railway Station.
Major roads and highways connecting Hyderabad to villages in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, including the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway (NH-65), are heavily congested, with traffic bottlenecks reported at key points such as the Pantangi Toll Gate. Private vehicles joining the exodus have further added to the traffic woes, turning roads into crowded thoroughfares. Authorities have advised commuters to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra time for travel.
Police have issued safety advisories for residents traveling for Sankranti 2026, urging them to inform their local police stations before leaving home. Officials warned that unoccupied homes are more susceptible to theft and advised travelers to secure valuables, jewelry, and important documents. They also emphasized ensuring CCTV cameras are properly installed and functional, with an uninterrupted power supply.
To maintain law and order, special patrolling teams and crime control units have been deployed in residential areas. Authorities recommended using central locking systems, alarms, and informing neighbors about extended absences. The police have assured heightened vigilance during the festival period to ensure both safe travel and security of homes.
