Russia has reiterated its support for India amid escalating tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted global energy markets. As the Iran-Israel conflict threatens oil supplies from the Gulf region, Moscow has assured New Delhi that it is prepared to meet India’s fuel requirements and prevent any major supply shortfall. The move is being viewed as a reaffirmation of the long-standing strategic partnership between the two countries.
The deepening crisis has raised concerns over the security of key maritime routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of global crude oil shipments pass. India relies heavily on imports from Gulf nations to meet its energy demands, and any prolonged disruption could significantly impact domestic fuel prices and economic stability. In this context, Russia’s offer has come as a major relief for policymakers in New Delhi.
Moscow has indicated that it is ready to scale up crude oil and natural gas exports to India. Despite ongoing Western sanctions, Russia has been supplying discounted oil to India and has now pledged to accelerate deliveries in light of the Gulf uncertainty. It has also expressed interest in negotiating long-term energy agreements aimed at securing India’s fuel needs for decades. Additionally, both sides are exploring cooperation in Arctic energy projects, including the supply of gas from Russia’s northern reserves.
The Indian government is said to be examining the proposal positively, viewing diversification of energy sources as a strategic imperative. Expanding energy ties with Russia could help India reduce overdependence on a single region and cushion the domestic market from global price volatility. Increased imports from Russia may also provide greater flexibility in managing fuel prices if international crude rates continue to surge.
