Noted Telugu poet Andesri passed away on Sunday night. According to reports, he suddenly collapsed at his residence and was immediately rushed to Gandhi Hospital by his sons, where he succumbed while undergoing treatment. Several political leaders, writers, and film personalities have expressed condolences over his demise, remembering his remarkable contribution to Telugu literature and the Telangana movement.

Born as Ande Ellayya in Rebarthi village of Maddur mandal, Jangaon near Warangal district, Andesri grew up as an orphan and had no formal education. Despite his humble beginnings, he earned an honorary doctorate from Kakatiya University. He once worked as a shepherd and was discovered by Swami Shankar Maharaj of the Sringeri Mutt, who was impressed by his singing talent and encouraged him to pursue poetry.

Andesri rose to prominence through his revolutionary and people-centric songs, many of which contributed to the success of director Narayana Murthy’s socially driven films. Known for his spontaneous verse and songs highlighting Telangana’s culture and nature, he received the Nandi Award in 2006 for his work in the film Ganga and also wrote lyrics for Bathukamma. In recognition of his pivotal role in the Telangana movement, he was honored with a ₹1 crore cash award by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy during the Telangana State Formation Day celebrations at Parade Grounds, Secunderabad, on June 2, 2025.
