Rahul Gandhi Raises Concerns Over India-US Trade Deal and Farmers’ Future

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has voiced strong concerns over the India-US trade deal, warning that it could undermine the country’s agricultural sovereignty. He criticized the government for potentially exposing Indian farmers to risks and emphasized that the agreement is not a temporary issue, but one that could affect farmers’ long-term livelihoods.

Gandhi specifically questioned provisions related to the import of DDG (Dried Distillers Grains) and genetically modified crops. He asked whether it is appropriate to feed Indian livestock with maize derived from genetically modified American crops and whether India’s dairy production would become dependent on US agriculture. He also raised concerns about the approval of genetically modified soybean oil and its potential impact on domestic soybean farmers.

The Congress leader further sought clarification on “additional products” under the deal, questioning if this would gradually allow imports of pulses and other American crops. He asked whether the removal of non-tariff barriers could lead to changes in policies regarding genetically modified crops, reduced grain procurement, or cuts to minimum support prices and bonuses, thereby pressuring Indian farmers.

Gandhi stressed that India must not grant permissions that allow foreign control over its agricultural sector. He highlighted the need to protect farmers’ interests and maintain India’s autonomy in agriculture, calling on the government to carefully assess the long-term implications of the trade deal before implementation.
