Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for Malaysia for a two-day visit on February 7–8, aimed at deepening India-Malaysia relations. The visit comes at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and will focus on enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, defense, security, and the semiconductor sector.
During the visit, key agreements are expected on the sale of India-built Dornier aircraft, maintenance of Malaysia’s Sukhoi-30 fighter jets, and Scorpene submarines. A separate MoU is likely to promote bilateral cooperation in semiconductor manufacturing, while discussions are also planned to expand India’s UPI digital payment services in Malaysia.
Beyond trade and defense, both nations are set to sign agreements on anti-corruption measures, disaster management cooperation, and mutual assistance during emergencies. Plans are also underway to establish a “Thiruvalluvar Center” for Indian studies in Malaysia and to enhance educational scholarship programs.
Malaysia is home to nearly 2.9 million people of Indian origin, the third-largest overseas Indian community globally. As part of the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to meet approximately 15,000 members of the Indian diaspora. This marks his third visit to Malaysia, ahead of his scheduled trip to Japan in March.
