New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort on Independence Day, issued a strong message on U.S. President Donald Trump’s additional tariffs on Indian goods. Stressing the need to demonstrate India’s strength in the global marketplace, Modi urged the nation to produce affordable, high-quality products to boost economic capability and safeguard the country’s image internationally. He called on traders to prioritise indigenous goods, noting that the world is closely monitoring India’s growth trajectory.
Modi reaffirmed that there would be no compromise on farmers’ welfare, stating that anti-farmer policies would not be tolerated under any circumstances. He criticised Trump’s justification of the tariffs—citing India’s oil imports from Russia—as misleading, linking the move instead to past U.S. pressure on India to import American dairy products, which New Delhi refused to protect domestic farmers. Modi suggested the tariff hike was a result of these trade disagreements, making it clear that India would not yield to external economic pressures.
