Colombo: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honour, the Mithra Vibhushana, during his official visit to the island nation. Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presented the award in recognition of Modi’s efforts in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Accepting the honour, Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude and dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion citizens of India. He described the recognition as a testament to the enduring historical and cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka.

“The Mithra Vibhushana reflects the deep-rooted friendship and shared values that connect our nations,” Modi said. He highlighted that the Dharma Chakra on the medal represents the common Buddhist heritage, while the rice-adorned Punkalasa symbolises prosperity and renewal. The inclusion of nine precious gems is said to denote the invaluable and eternal friendship between both countries.
The award presentation comes as part of broader efforts to reinforce bilateral cooperation, with discussions expected to focus on trade, cultural exchange, and regional security.
