Beijing/Tianjin: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in China, landing in Tianjin to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This marks his first visit to China since the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes along the India-China border in Ladakh. Modi last visited China in 2018.

The visit assumes added significance amid ongoing trade tensions, with the United States imposing high tariffs and India facing a 50 percent tariff on certain goods. Prior to China, Modi spent two days in Japan, where bilateral discussions led to nearly 13 agreements aimed at benefiting India. Japan has signaled plans to invest ₹6 lakh crore in India over the next decade, particularly in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, telecommunications, clean energy, critical minerals, and emerging technologies.
During the SCO summit on August 31 and September 1 in Tianjin, world leaders including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are expected to participate. In a recent interview, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the need for India and China to work together to ensure stability in the global economic system.
