Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have sharply escalated, with recent border clashes reaching critical levels and resulting in widespread civilian displacement and casualties. Pakistan has accused the Taliban of failing to curb militant attacks from Afghanistan into its territory. In response, Pakistan launched a major military operation, codenamed Operation Ghazab Lil Haq, on February 26, targeting strategic sites, including the Bagram airbase in Afghanistan. Pakistani forces reportedly killed 67 Taliban fighters during overnight operations across 16 border locations and claimed that 53 areas along the roughly 2,600-kilometer border were subjected to Taliban attacks. The strikes also caused destruction to an aircraft hangar and two warehouses at Bagram.

The ongoing conflict has forced nearly 20,000 Afghan families to flee their homes, according to United Nations statistics. At least 42 civilians have died, and 104 have been seriously injured, including children. Already affected by severe malnutrition, the civilian population faces further humanitarian challenges as food distribution in conflict zones has been disrupted. The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that approximately 160,000 people in the region are now facing acute food insecurity, raising urgent concerns about access to basic necessities.

Both nations have reported military casualties amid the clashes. Afghanistan announced that 25 of its soldiers were killed, while Pakistan confirmed that around 150 of its troops were neutralized during the operation. The escalating hostilities have intensified fears of prolonged conflict along the border and highlighted the vulnerability of civilian populations caught in the crossfire. Analysts note that both nations are facing substantial human and material losses as tensions continue to rise.

The conflict’s humanitarian impact is compounded by pre-existing vulnerabilities in the affected regions of Afghanistan, where malnutrition and food scarcity are already widespread. With thousands displaced and basic services disrupted, international organizations have called for immediate aid and conflict mitigation measures. Meanwhile, the military standoff shows little sign of de-escalation, raising concerns of further escalation between Pakistan and Afghanistan and the potential for broader regional instability.
