Pakistan Declares Nationwide Oil Conservation Emergency Amid Middle East Crisis

The escalating conflict in the Middle East is creating global concerns, particularly over oil supply disruptions. Clashes between Iran, the United States, and Israel, along with disturbances at the Strait of Hormuz, have significantly impacted international fuel shipments. Pakistan, being heavily dependent on imported crude, has been severely affected. With crude reserves depleting, the Shehbaz Sharif government declared a nationwide “oil conservation” emergency to address the looming crisis.

As part of the emergency measures, the government has implemented strict restrictions to reduce energy consumption and save foreign exchange reserves. Public and private sector offices are required to follow a 50 percent work-from-home policy and adopt a four-day workweek. Schools and colleges have been closed for two weeks, with instructions for students to continue lessons online. Authorities believe that keeping citizens at home will significantly reduce petrol and diesel consumption.

The government has also issued a special appeal to the affluent, urging them to avoid unnecessary travel and minimize vehicle use. According to *The Dawn*, officials warned that Pakistan’s oil supply could come to a complete halt in the coming days and advised citizens to be prepared for any eventuality. The measures are intended to manage the crisis and maintain social order amid rising tensions.

Rising global energy prices have pushed petrol prices in Pakistan up by 24.4 percent and diesel by 21.8 percent. The current rates stand at PKR 321.17 per liter for petrol and PKR 335.86 per liter for diesel, equivalent to approximately INR 109 and INR 114 per liter, respectively. Public discontent has grown over the government’s strict measures, with social media flooded with criticism of political leaders and officials allegedly spending public funds on luxuries while citizens bear the burden.

Experts warn that the ongoing instability in the Middle East could further strain Pakistan’s economy. The government’s restrictions, including limiting people to their homes, are seen as measures to prevent mass protests and maintain order. Analysts caution that without a resolution to the regional tensions, Pakistan’s economic situation could deteriorate further, exacerbating the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
