In a major legal setback for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, a Pakistani court has sentenced him to an additional 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana corruption case. The court also imposed an identical 17-year jail term on his wife, Bushra Bibi, along with substantial fines.
The case dates back to 2021, when Imran Khan and his wife visited Saudi Arabia and were reportedly gifted an expensive Bulgari jewellery set by the Saudi Crown Prince. Under Pakistan’s rules, high-value gifts received by heads of state must be deposited with the government-run Toshakhana. Prosecutors alleged that Imran Khan violated these regulations by purchasing the jewellery at a heavily undervalued price and later selling it in the open market for a significant profit.

Following an investigation, the court concluded that the former prime minister had illegally sold the costly gifts, leading to his conviction. Imran Khan is currently incarcerated at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, where he is already serving sentences in multiple other cases.
In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed fines of 16.4 million Pakistani rupees each on Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. The judge noted that factors such as the age of the accused and Bushra Bibi being a woman were considered while determining the sentence.
Imran Khan’s legal team has rejected the verdict, stating that they do not accept the lower court’s ruling and will challenge it in the high court in the coming days. Meanwhile, his supporters have alleged that the case is driven by political vendetta, accusing authorities of attempting to keep Imran Khan behind bars permanently to block his return to active politics.
