India has emerged as one of the safest and fastest-growing aviation markets globally, Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjaraapu Rammohan Naidu stated. Speaking at an event in Visakhapatnam, he highlighted significant developments in the domestic aviation sector and reiterated the central government’s focus on making air travel accessible to the common citizen.
The number of operational airports in India has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. From a limited number when the NDA government came to power, the count has now reached 167, with a new airport being inaugurated approximately every 45 days. Under the ‘UDAN’ scheme, air services have expanded to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, providing affordable travel options to the middle class. The minister emphasized that air travel should be considered a necessity rather than a luxury.
On domestic aircraft manufacturing, Rammohan Naidu said that producing planes within India could further reduce domestic service charges. This would also reduce reliance on foreign companies and generate substantial employment opportunities for the youth, boosting the country’s aviation ecosystem.
In Andhra Pradesh, efforts to strengthen aviation infrastructure are underway with the rapid construction of the Bhogapuram Greenfield Airport, which is expected to ease pressure on Visakhapatnam Airport and enhance international connectivity. Proposals for new airports in Daggadarthi (Nellore) and Kuppam (Chittoor) are also ready, while services from Orvakallu Airport are being expanded to meet growing demand.
In Telangana, discussions are ongoing to revive old airports in Warangal (Mamnoor), Nizamabad (Jakranpally), and Adilabad for civil aviation purposes, along with plans for a new airport in Newgudem. The minister expressed optimism that improved infrastructure and affordable fares are helping realize the dream of air travel for the common citizen across both states.
