Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Reddy faced a legal setback as the Chennai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) ruled in favor of his mother, YS Vijayamma, in the ongoing Saraswati Cements share dispute. The ruling comes after Vijayamma challenged a July 29, 2025 verdict by the NCLT Hyderabad bench that had favored YS Jagan. The Chennai bench directed that the status quo on all shares belonging to Vijayamma be maintained until further orders.
The dispute arose from allegations by YS Jagan that Vijayamma had illegally transferred shares to her daughter, YS Sharmila. Jagan had approached the NCLT seeking annulment of these transfers. The Hyderabad bench had initially heard the petition and reserved its judgment, ordering that the transfers be put on hold, deeming them irregular.
During the Chennai hearing, Vijayamma’s legal team argued that all share transfers were conducted lawfully and in compliance with legal requirements. The bench, comprising Justice N. Sheshasai and Technical Member Jatinendranath, upheld Vijayamma’s claim, allowing her to retain control over the disputed shares while maintaining the existing status quo.
The verdict has significant political implications, with speculation that YS Jagan may interpret the ruling as a setback while supporters of Vijayamma view it as a legal affirmation of her rights. Attention now turns to YS Sharmila and how she will respond to the Chennai bench’s decision, as the ruling is likely to influence ongoing family and political dynamics within the YSR Congress Party.
