Prime Minister Modi used the 23rd Russia-India Summit in New Delhi to stress peace on Ukraine, telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that India is “not neutral” but “on the side of peace.” The meeting at Hyderabad House comes as global powers push for a settlement in the nearly four-year Russia-Ukraine war. During the summit, Putin stated that Russia is working towards a “peaceful resolution” in Ukraine and has shared the details of related proposals with India. Both leaders issued a joint statement emphasizing the importance of resolving the conflict through dialogue and diplomatic channels rather than military confrontation.
The summit also showcased the personal rapport between the two leaders. Analysts noted that Putin opted to travel in Modi’s personal vehicle instead of his heavily-armoured RS-222 “Flying on Wheels” car, a symbolic gesture underscoring the trust and friendship between the two heads of state. The visit highlights the deepening strategic and diplomatic ties between India and Russia.
Western countries are closely monitoring the summit amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. While nations such as the United States have imposed sanctions on Russian energy trade, India continues to maintain commercial relations. Putin pointed out that the U.S. itself imports nuclear fuel and energy from Russia, questioning why India should not have similar access.
Key areas of discussion included strengthening defence cooperation, safeguarding bilateral trade from external pressures, and exploring collaboration in small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Analysts suggest that the talks are likely to reinforce India-Russia strategic partnerships and signal continued engagement despite mounting global geopolitical tensions.
