Kathmandu: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on Friday evening, raising fresh concerns in the already quake-hit region. The National Center for Seismology reported that the epicenter was located 3 kilometers from Garkhakot at a depth of 20 kilometers. The tremor was recorded at 7:52 PM local time.
Mild tremors were also felt across parts of northern India, including Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. As of now, there are no confirmed reports of casualties or property damage.
The incident comes just a day after a minor earthquake of 2.6 magnitude was reported in Maharashtra’s Solapur district.
The latest seismic activity in Nepal follows a series of devastating earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand earlier this week. The Myanmar quake caused extensive destruction, with over 4,000 reported fatalities and more than 5,000 injured. At least 341 people remain unaccounted for, and several buildings collapsed or were left structurally unsafe. Shocking visuals of the aftermath have been widely shared on social media.
The frequency of recent earthquakes across South and Southeast Asia has heightened fears of further seismic disturbances in the region. Authorities and disaster response teams remain on alert amid growing public concern.
