A massive fire broke out at the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital’s trauma center in Jaipur, Rajasthan, on Sunday night, triggering panic and tragedy. The blaze started on the second floor and quickly spread to the ICU ward, where 24 patients were admitted at the time. Six patients lost their lives in the incident, while several others sustained serious injuries, with many in critical condition. Hospital staff and attendants acted swiftly, rushing to evacuate patients from the ICU as the flames intensified.

According to Anurag Dhakad, in-charge of the trauma center, the fire was caused by a short circuit in the trauma ICU. Of the 24 patients present, 11 were in the trauma ICU and 13 in the semi-ICU. Despite the medical team’s efforts, including performing CPR, six patients could not be saved. The deceased were identified as Pintu (Sikar), Dileep (Aandhi), Srinath (Bharatpur), Rukmani (Bharatpur), Khushma (Bharatpur), and Bahadur (Sanganer). Five other patients remain in critical condition as treatment continues.
Amid the chaos, family members and attendants rushed to move patients and their beds out of the building, relocating many severely ill patients to safer areas. Videos of the incident, now viral on social media, show patients lying on beds with oxygen cylinders outside the hospital. Firefighters and hospital authorities battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control, as an investigation into the cause and safety lapses is expected to follow.
