Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering fight to restore democracy and defend human rights in her country. The Nobel Committee recognized her decades-long commitment to non-violent resistance and her courage in standing up to authoritarian rule. Twenty-five years ago, Machado’s statement, “I cannot stay home and watch while my country collapses. We must choose ballots over bullets,” became a defining moment in her political journey. Since then, she has continued to be a powerful voice for the people of Venezuela, facing repeated harassment and threats.

In a recent interview, Machado said her inspiration comes from Mahatma Gandhi, whom she regards as her greatest role model. She explained that Gandhi’s philosophy taught her that peace is not a sign of weakness but the true essence of humanity. “To achieve peace, freedom is essential, and to secure freedom, strength is necessary,” she said. Machado also praised India, describing it as a great democracy that the entire world looks up to. She added that India stands as an example for many nations and expressed hope that one day she would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in person.

Born on October 7, 1967, in Venezuela, Machado is the daughter of psychologist Corina Parisca. She holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s in Finance. In 1992, she founded the Atenea Foundation to support street children and orphans, marking the beginning of her social and political activism. Her outspokenness against the government’s authoritarian policies led to charges of treason and conspiracy.

During the 2014 protests against hyperinflation, shortages of essential goods, and the dictatorial leadership of President Nicolás Maduro, Machado addressed the Organization of American States conference in Panama, highlighting Venezuela’s deteriorating situation. Her speech angered the ruling party, resulting in her expulsion from parliament and multiple criminal cases. Despite these challenges, Machado’s resilience and steadfast dedication to democratic principles have made her an international symbol of peaceful resistance, earning her the prestigious 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
