Lane Rules for Cars, Trucks Ignored, Triggering Fatal ORR Accident in Telangana

Unsafe driving practices on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) are resulting in frequent fatal accidents, with officials identifying lane violations and overspeeding as the primary causes of concern.

The ORR consists of four lanes on each side. As per traffic regulations, cars are required to use lanes one and two, while heavy vehicles must operate in lanes three and four. Authorities noted that a majority of accidents occur when these lane discipline rules are ignored. Vehicles travelling in lanes one and two are also advised not to exceed 100 kmph.

Officials stressed that drivers must avoid sudden and unsafe lane changes. Motorists are expected to check traffic on both sides and rear before switching lanes, and must use indicators while doing so. Nearly 50% of ORR accidents are attributed to improper lane changes, according to traffic officials. They further cautioned that high speeds reduce vehicle control and increase stopping distance, making collisions more likely, especially when vehicles ahead slow down unexpectedly.

In emergency situations, vehicles must be parked only on the extreme left service lane at designated spots, with hazard lights turned on. Wrong-way driving at entry and exit points has been strictly prohibited. Authorities have also highlighted that speeding significantly increases accident risk, as braking efficiency reduces sharply at higher speeds.

In a recent tragic incident on the outskirts of Hyderabad in Telangana, a horrific road accident occurred near Shamshabad on the ORR Exit-16. A speeding car lost control and rammed into a stationary lorry parked on the roadside. In this devastating crash, six people travelling in the car died on the spot, while another person sustained critical injuries and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The victims were reportedly travelling from Pedda Golconda towards Shamshabad when the accident took place. Police suspect that overspeeding and negligence may have led to the fatal crash. Officials reached the spot immediately, registered a case, and launched an investigation.

Authorities said these measures and warnings are aimed at reducing confusion, improving commuter safety, and ensuring smoother traffic flow on the ORR through strict enforcement of driving discipline and lane regulations.
