New Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Working President K.T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Tuesday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to initiate strict measures against political parties that fail to honour election promises. Following a meeting with ECI officials in New Delhi, KTR told reporters that elected representatives who do not fulfil manifesto commitments should face membership cancellation.
Accusing the Congress party of misleading voters in Telangana with 420 promises backed by bond papers, KTR said political parties must be held accountable for making false or unfulfilled assurances. He demanded reforms to curb such practices and highlighted concerns over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), calling for a return to ballot paper-based voting starting with the Bihar elections.
On voter list revisions, KTR emphasised the need for transparency, suggesting that all political parties be involved in the process. He called for booth-level, all-party committees and asked the ECI to publish reasons for voter deletions. He also reiterated BRS’s long-standing demand to remove election symbols resembling its car symbol, citing a previous loss in Bhuvanagiri due to a similar “road roller” symbol.
KTR criticised the Congress government for failing to implement promised welfare measures for the BC community and not introducing a sub-plan. Regarding the Kaleshwaram project report, he alleged it contained baseless claims aimed at maligning former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and the BRS. He demanded that the full report be tabled in the Assembly and warned that BRS would strongly counter the allegations during the session.
