As March draws to a close, India is set to witness several key changes from April 1 that are expected to impact households and businesses alike. These include possible revisions in fuel prices, the rollout of a new Income Tax framework, and updates to banking, PAN card, and railway refund rules. The developments come amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which are influencing global energy markets.
Fuel prices are likely to see an upward revision due to supply disruptions linked to tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Domestic LPG cylinder rates may increase, while prices of aviation turbine fuel (ATF), CNG, and PNG are also expected to be adjusted. Any hike in fuel costs could have a cascading impact on transportation and essential commodities.
A major reform in taxation will come into effect with the introduction of the Income Tax Act, 2025, replacing the decades-old 1961 law. The new framework aims to simplify tax compliance and documentation. As part of the changes, Form 16 issued to salaried employees will be replaced with a new format, while Form 16A will be renamed as Form 131.
The banking sector will also see revised rules from April, particularly in ATM transactions. HDFC Bank will count UPI-based ATM withdrawals within the free transaction limit, with charges applicable beyond the threshold. Punjab National Bank has revised daily withdrawal limits based on card categories, while Bandhan Bank will levy penalties for failed transactions due to insufficient balance.
Additionally, new norms for PAN card applications will require documents beyond Aadhaar for verification. Indian Railways has also tightened its ticket cancellation policy, stating that no refund will be issued if tickets are cancelled within eight hours of departure, compared to the earlier four-hour window. These changes are expected to have a direct financial impact on consumers across the country.
