India’s global connectivity is on the rise, as highlighted in the newly released Henley Passport Index 2026. The Indian passport has gained significant ground compared to last year, reflecting the country’s growing diplomatic influence and travel freedom for its citizens.
The passport ranking has improved from 85th last year to 75th this year, marking a jump of 10 places. While this indicates strengthened international access, the number of countries offering visa-free entry to Indian travelers has slightly declined from 57 to 55, signaling some limitations remain.

Iran and Bolivia have recently revised their visa policies for Indian citizens. Iran suspended its bilateral visa-free entry due to security concerns and issues related to illegal recruitment, requiring travelers to obtain a regular visa in advance. Bolivia, which previously offered visa-on-arrival, has implemented a mandatory e-Visa system from January 2026, requiring online approval prior to travel.
Currently, Indian passport holders can travel to 55 countries either visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access. While Singapore retains the top spot globally, India continues to improve its international mobility. Countries such as Thailand and Malaysia still offer visa-free access, but travelers are advised to check the latest visa regulations of their destination before planning trips.
