The long-awaited Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project is progressing at a rapid pace, with the Ministry of Railways accelerating construction work on India’s first high-speed rail corridor. In a significant development, the ministry has released the first official image of the bullet train, which has already gone viral on social media. The photograph was taken at the Railway Ministry building in New Delhi on Monday.
The high-speed train is designed to operate at a maximum speed of around 300 kmph, significantly reducing travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. At present, the journey between the two major industrial cities takes over seven hours by rail or road. Once operational, the bullet train is expected to cut the travel time to nearly two hours, marking a major transformation in intercity connectivity. The train is expected to feature eight advanced coaches in its initial configuration.

The Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor will comprise 12 stations, including Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai. The project is being developed in phases, with authorities planning to open sections for public use progressively as construction is completed.
According to railway officials, the first operational segment of the project, covering the Surat–Bilimora stretch of approximately 100 kilometres, is likely to be inaugurated on August 15, 2027, coinciding with Independence Day celebrations. Officials added that construction activities are progressing swiftly to meet the scheduled timelines for this ambitious infrastructure project.
The Railways Ministry has stated that the corridor will significantly enhance high-speed connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra, boosting economic activity and reducing travel time once fully operational.
