Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness over India’s economy recording a better-than-expected 7.8 percent growth in the April–June quarter. Congratulating the citizens of the country, he simultaneously renewed his call for greater use of indigenous goods and services in pursuit of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), saying the growth figures stood as a testament to the hard work and determination of the Indian people.
The Prime Minister noted that India achieved this growth even as wars and crises continued to unfold across the globe. He said the ongoing conflicts had disrupted global supply chains, and that the world had seen no real stability since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite this, he said, India continued to move forward rapidly.
According to data released on Monday, India’s economy grew by 7.8 percent between April and June 2026. The figures indicate that the Indian economy remained resilient even amid global uncertainty and concerns over the fallout from the war in Iran.
On the occasion, PM Modi urged citizens to give greater priority to indigenous products, particularly calling for a reduction in foreign travel, destination weddings abroad, and unnecessary gold purchases. “Don’t travel abroad for leisure. Avoid holding destination weddings overseas — embrace the idea of ‘Wed in India’. Don’t buy gold unless it’s necessary,” the Prime Minister said.
He said the more citizens use Indian-made products and services, the stronger the country’s economy would become. Modi expressed confidence that if India continues on this path toward self-reliance, the country would be able to hand over a developed nation to its youth by the time it completes 100 years of independence. He called on every citizen to celebrate the country’s economic growth while also working harder to achieve the goal of a Viksit Bharat (developed India).
He further urged people to cut back on non-essential foreign travel and overseas weddings, as well as non-urgent gold purchases, for at least a year, saying this would help ease pressure on the country’s foreign exchange reserves. At the same time, he encouraged citizens to increasingly buy Made in India products.
