India’s defence sector is set to mark a major milestone with the induction of the indigenously built stealth warship INS Taragiri into the Indian Navy. The advanced vessel will be formally commissioned on April 3 at Visakhapatnam in a grand ceremony, to be attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

INS Taragiri represents India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing and warship design. It is the fourth vessel under the Project 17A class and has been constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. The warship weighs approximately 6,670 tonnes and features over 75 percent indigenous components, highlighting the country’s push towards domestic production.

The construction of the vessel involved the participation of more than 200 MSMEs, generating employment opportunities for thousands. The project underscores the government’s focus on strengthening the domestic defence ecosystem and reducing dependence on imports.

Officials have described INS Taragiri as a “floating missile powerhouse,” equipped with advanced weaponry and cutting-edge systems. It carries supersonic cruise missiles such as the BrahMos missile, along with medium-range surface-to-air missile systems capable of countering aerial threats. The warship is also fitted with a multi-function radar system and advanced stealth technology, enabling it to detect and engage multiple targets while remaining difficult to track.

In addition to its combat capabilities, the vessel is powered by a combined diesel or gas propulsion system, allowing it to operate at high speeds across long distances. It is equipped with a modern combat management system that integrates all onboard weapons for swift response to threats. Beyond warfare, INS Taragiri is also capable of supporting humanitarian missions and international maritime cooperation, further enhancing India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.
