New Delhi: The United States had imposed a 50% tariff on India, citing concerns that India was benefiting from crude oil imports from Russia. Initially set at 25%, the tariff was subsequently raised by an additional 25%, coming into effect on August 27. This has kept the total US tariff on India at 50%.
Amid this, India is reportedly planning to increase its crude oil imports from Russia. Sources indicate that imports could rise by 10 to 20 percent in September, translating to approximately 300,000 additional barrels per day. Currently, India imports around 40% of its crude oil from Russia, with the supplier offering a discount of $2-3 per barrel.

While the US has criticized India’s Russian crude purchases, the Indian government is defending its decision, noting that the US and European Union also import significant quantities of Russian oil. Officials view the move as a strategic step to secure energy supplies and maintain stability amid international trade pressures.
