New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all states to carry out nationwide mock drills on May 7 to enhance public awareness and preparedness against potential airstrikes and emergency situations. The drills are specifically designed to educate citizens, including students, on how to respond during emergencies, particularly in the event of an attack from hostile nations.
The MHA’s directive comes in the wake of increasing tensions between India and Pakistan, following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the murder of 26 tourists in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, which India attributes to Pakistan-based terrorists. In light of these developments, India has severed diplomatic ties with Pakistan and is preparing its military for potential escalation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a meeting with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, discussed India’s military readiness and response strategies. While India has not yet taken military action following the terrorist attack, the government is increasing pressure on Pakistan through various measures. This includes halting imports from Pakistan, blocking water from the Sindhu River, and cutting diplomatic relations, all of which aim to further isolate the neighboring country.
The MHA’s mock drills will focus on critical aspects such as how to respond to aerial attacks, handling emergency situations, and educating citizens on self-defense and safety measures in case of a conflict. The government has indicated that the current situation necessitates heightened preparedness for the possibility of war with Pakistan.
