India has issued a travel advisory for its citizens amid escalating violent protests in Iran triggered by a severe economic crisis, soaring prices and a sharp fall in the Iranian currency. The Ministry of External Affairs on Monday urged Indian nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran until further notice, citing intense unrest in Tehran and several other major cities.
The advisory also outlines precautionary measures for Indian citizens and persons of Indian origin currently residing in Iran for employment, business or other purposes. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal advised Indians to remain extremely cautious, avoid protest sites and large public gatherings, and closely follow updates issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran through its official website and social media platforms.
According to reports, public anger has surged following the record depreciation of the Iranian rial and a steep rise in the prices of essential commodities. Iran’s economy has been hit hard by international sanctions and internal policy challenges, leading to widespread demonstrations. Clashes between protesters and security forces have reportedly turned violent, with multiple casualties reported in firing by security personnel, particularly in parts of Tehran.
Reiterating that the safety of Indian nationals is a top priority, the Ministry said emergency helpline numbers have been activated by the Indian Embassy in Tehran. Indian citizens facing any emergency situation have been urged to contact the embassy immediately for assistance.
