Beyond the countries that already exist in the world today, several new nations may soon come into being. Some territories currently under the rule of major powers are seeking to become independent states. In a development set to deal a major blow to the United Kingdom (UK), three constituent nations have moved to assert their independence. The leaders of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — regions that have long sought freedom from British rule — convened a special summit in Cardiff, the Welsh capital, as part of their push to separate from the UK.
Political observers believe this development could pave the way for the eventual breakup of the United Kingdom. The summit is understood to have taken key decisions aimed at drawing up plans for a constitutional change process and strengthening coordination among the three nations. Adding further weight to this development is the fact that pro-independence regional parties are currently in power in all three of these territories.
Leaders of these regions have accused the Westminster government in London of neglecting the interests of their territories. The summit was attended by Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney, Wales’ First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth, and Sinn Féin Vice President Michelle O’Neill, whose party favors Irish unification. The three leaders are demanding that the people of their respective regions be given the right to decide their own future. In the most recent local elections, the ruling Labour Party suffered a crushing defeat, a result that significantly strengthened nationalist parties across these regions. In Wales, Plaid Cymru has formed the new government, while in Northern Ireland, Sinn Féin has already taken charge of the administration. In Scotland, meanwhile, the Scottish National Party has emerged as the dominant political force. This alignment of three regional governments is set to deal a serious blow to the UK’s federal structure.
Meanwhile, remarks made by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham in Parliament appear to have added further fuel to this separatist movement. Burnham had stated that a second independence referendum could be held in Scotland and Northern Ireland if a “clear shift” in public opinion were to emerge in favor of it. Following the ensuing controversy, the Prime Minister’s Office subsequently walked back these remarks, declaring that the question of Scottish independence was not something within its purview. By then, however, the damage had already been done. Adding to the controversy, US President Donald Trump sparked a sensation by remarking that Ireland becoming a united country was inevitable in the future. At the same time, Scottish leader John Swinney issued a strong warning, stating that the current political arrangement was unlikely to continue for much longer, and that London’s rulers needed to prepare for a “post-UK” future following the breakup of the United Kingdom. Analysts believe that the alliance forged between the leaders of these three prospective independent nations is steadily moving toward erasing Britain’s territorial integrity from the world map as it currently exists.
